At Via Seating, we are dedicated to improving workplace research and knowledge for our customers and when collaborating with industry professionals. The Via Learning Studio offers continuing education courses (CEUs) that are pre-approved by the IDCEC, AIA, and GBCI for customers, designers, and industry professionals. These classes are designed to empower attendees with knowledge to improve their experiences in work and collaborative environments.

BIFMA LEVEL®—LEVEL is BIFMA’s sustainability certification program for furniture—has a rating system, which will be outlined and utilized to demystify furniture’s role in sustainability.

CEU 5: Attributes of Contract Furniture

Description: What drives furniture decisions in the commercial built environment? Key attributes are: Aesthetics, Quality, Craftsmanship, Safety, Performance, Health & Wellness, Sustainability, and Verification. These eight key attributes of commercial furniture are explored and explained for their impact on decision-making for the design professional wanting to make informed selections with safety, sustainability, and wellness at the forefront. The course content will include the importance of original design, an overview of wood and upholstery manufacturing construction methods, impacts on user health & wellness, sustainability of commonly used materials, and the role of certification schemes and evaluation tools to verify each attribute.

  • Explain the eight key attributes of commercial furniture.
  • Explain how these attributes impact the decision-making process for commercial design.
  • Understand how safety, sustainability and wellness impact commercial design.
  • Explore the roles of certification in commercial furniture.
