Via Leads with Sustainability
Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do here at Via Seating. This starts first & foremost with supporting our incredible people. Via Seating actively seeks opportunities to foster a rich, diverse culture of multi-talented individuals. We nurture extensive Via-Lead Give Back » & Enrichment Efforts—such as our local, adopted Tahoe-Pyramid trail, spearheaded by our own Engineering Leader, Michal Powell. We contribute to many give back & community enrichment efforts locally and across the US. We have a passion in action for fostering community, caring for our environment & providing education + mentorship opportunities.
Building a Beautiful Culture:
Education & Enrichment
Team Via takes a very passionate approach to education & enrichment. This is seen in our numerous contributions to local schools & nonprofits with an emphasis on education. It is engrained into our production & operations where every position » is built on a tiered advancement program with frequent cross-training. It is the motivation behind our Sales team lead Via Learning Studio » where we offer free CEUs including several of our own we developed in house. It is at the heart of our Engineering internship program (engineering team shown above), which we have offered as a paid internship opportunity to students of the University of Nevada, Reno, for every year since 2013.
Caring for the Environment
Via Seating is committed to both limiting our negative impact on the environment & contributing to protecting the nature around us. Our direct effort to nourishing our local surroundings are best seen in our adoption of & cleaning events for a local trail (see above). We also contribute to numerous parks & environmental improvement efforts. Additionally, every product we develop goes through a comprehensive Design for the Environment process to ensure we deliver conscientious, sustainable solutions. Fostering Community
At Via Seating, we often say, practically no one spent their life thinking they wanted to produce chairs for a living, however, everyone wants to make a difference in someone’s life. Of course, our chairs help people perform their best and we are very proud of the world class products we produce. But it extends way beyond that, as we actively engage with our community and reach out to multiple organizations dedicated to helping people who have had challenges and setbacks. From Silver State Prison Industries offering positions to people looking to reenter the workforce, multiple support organizations including Work for Warriors, CCSNN, Awaken, Ridge house, and others such as Bristlecone, Reno Vet Center, Washoe Tribe, Three Tribes/One Nation, Veteran Development Group. We have been able to bring together an incredible group of dedicated individuals that share this passion and directly reflect the community we live in i.e. a rich tapestry from all backgrounds and life experiences.
Sustainable Design
In terms of product, Sustainability begins with a Design for the Environment (DfE) design approach for every single product we produce. During this process, all components are screened to identify and assess the human and ecosystem health impacts of chemicals of concern. We screen all product components to the ANSI/BIFMA e3-2019 Annex B- List of Chemicals of Concern and the California Proposition 65 List. We work with ergonomists & customers to ensure we’re developing innovative solutions that achieve our goal of Intentional Ergonomic Design Focused on Health and Wellness.
When Designing New Product We Emphasize:
Limited Water Usage
Water is a precious commodity for everyone, especially in the high desert valley surrounding Sparks, Nevada—our home base. With this in mind, we figured out how to eliminate all H2O beyond the measured amount we use to steam wrinkles out of the final, upholstered product.
Use of Recyclable Materials
We intentionally use products, which are highly recyclable in nature. This includes those that contain all or majority aluminum, steel and polypropylene. This also includes our shipping materials: corrugated cardboard and a polyethylene bag.
Safe Product Usage
We at Via Seating are committed to using products that are safe for the environment as well as the individuals who use them. As a standard practice in our DfE program, we work consistently to identify hazardous chemicals and eliminate them from our products.
Hazardous chemicals we do not use in Via Seating products include:
Hazardous phthalates
Hexavalent chromium
Ozone depleting chemicals
PBDE fire retardants
Smart Sourcing
Via Seating believes in social responsibility, environmental protection and fair cooperation as the key tenets of our business relationships. We do not tolerate child labor, human exploitation or any form of discrimination in supplier partners’ hiring and employment practices. We required our supplier partners to provide a harassment and abuse free workplace. When sourcing components, we place priority on local options to limit carbon emissions in transport.
Vigorous Testing
Our products are annually assessed by a 3rd party team of chemists & globally-recognized ISO 17025 accredited lab. Via products are rigorously tested for conformance to ANSI/BIFMA e3 standard credits 7.6.1, 7.6.2 and/or credit 7.6.3 as well as conference to low-emitting materials. This is in addition to our extensive and continuous functionality & durability tests conducted within Via Seating’s internal, ISO 17025:2017 accredited lab.
Intentional Certification
99% of Via Seating product is BIFMA LEVEL® 2 certified & CLEAN AIR GOLD (low harmful emissions) certified by Intertek, an independent testing laboratory. LEVEL® is BIFMA’s sustainability certification program for environmentally preferable and socially responsible furniture that contributes to sustainable building ratings. It offers 3 tiers with tier 2 requiring extensive qualifications be met at all levels of an organization.
